Friday August 2nd: The Challenges of Gay Fatherhood in Scandinavia
This seminar highlights the challenges male same-sex couples face on their journey to parenthood in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Data from the past two decades shows about 600 fathers in male same-sex couples compared to 7,000 mothers in female same-sex couples, underscoring significant difficulties. Fathers who do achieve parenthood are often wealthy and highly educated, turning to surrogacy abroad due to its illegality in the Nordic countries. Finally, we’ll show how limited parental rights impact gay fathers’ work and family life, with non-biological fathers facing stricter requirements for parental leave.
